Oh, what a great day to be out exploring.

Thank goodness for air conditioning because Colorado clearly chose violence with the weather today.

Over the weekend, Jeff and I started talking about taking a little day trip. He's off for the summer, neither one of us had anything pressing on the calendar, and by Monday we had officially declared Wednesday Adventure Day.

Sometimes the best outings don't require months of planning. Sometimes they just require two people looking at an open calendar and saying, "Let's go do something fun."

So that's exactly what we did.

Our first stop was the Leonardo da Vinci Museum of North America.

Now, if you've known me for more than five minutes, you probably know I am a complete nerd when it comes to science, creativity, innovation, and people who refuse to stay inside the boxes society hands them. Leonardo da Vinci checks every one of those boxes and then proceeds to redesign the boxes entirely.

I've always thought he was one of the most fascinating human beings who ever lived.

Rolling through the museum felt a little like being a kid turned loose in a candy store. Not only are there incredible replicas of many of Leonardo's inventions, but some of them are actually hands-on. You can touch them. Move them. Experiment with them.

For a science-loving nerd like me, that was ridiculously exciting.

I may have fan-girled a little.

I regret nothing.

One thing that impressed me just as much as the exhibits was the accessibility. Not the "technically accessible if you squint and lower your expectations" kind of accessible. The genuinely usable kind. Wide spaces, easy navigation, and even bathrooms that were thoughtfully designed for actual humans who use wheelchairs.

Imagine that.

After thoroughly geeking out over Leonardo, we decided that since we were already in Pueblo, we should finally visit the Riverwalk.

We've talked about doing it for years.

Years.

Apparently we were waiting for some official invitation from the Universe because we certainly hadn't gotten around to doing it on our own.

Well, today was the day.

And wow.

The Riverwalk is beautiful.

The water, the pathways, the bridges, the peaceful atmosphere — it was one of those places that instantly makes you slow down a little. I can only imagine how lively and fun it must be during the Chile and Frijoles Festival and other events, but there was something special about seeing it on a quiet weekday afternoon.

No crowds.

No rush.

Just a chance to enjoy the scenery and each other's company.

From there, we wandered over to the Pueblo History Museum, which turned out to be another delightful surprise. It's one of those local treasures that could easily be overlooked if you're not paying attention. The exhibits were fascinating, the museum was welcoming, and once again accessibility was clearly part of the design rather than an afterthought.

I didn't investigate the restroom situation this time, so the jury is still out on that one.

By then we had worked up an appetite, which led us directly across the street to Bingo Burger.

Friends.

Let's talk about this burger.

Absolutely delicious.

One of the best burgers I've had in a very long time, and the sweet potato fries were equally impressive. Their cranberry barbecue sauce deserves its own fan club and possibly a small holiday in its honor.

If you find yourself in Pueblo, do yourself a favor and order some.

Trust me.

On the way home, we decided the adventure wasn't quite finished yet.

For years we've talked about driving Skyline Drive in Cañon City. It's one of those things that always lands on the "someday" list.

Today, apparently, was Someday.

The views were absolutely breathtaking.

The road itself?

Let's just say I was very grateful it is a one-way drive.

I was also very grateful that I am not afraid of heights.

And perhaps most grateful of all that Jeff was driving.

The scenery was spectacular, but there were a few moments where I was perfectly content being the passenger and simply enjoying the view while someone else handled the steering wheel.

As we made our way home, sun-kissed, tired, and smiling, I found myself feeling incredibly grateful.

Grateful for beautiful places.

Grateful for unexpected discoveries.

Grateful for accessibility that allows me to experience them.

Grateful for a day filled with learning, exploring, and making memories.

And most of all, grateful for the man beside me who has been my best friend, favorite travel companion, and love of my life for more than three decades.

The truth is, some of the best days aren't the big milestone moments.

They're the Wednesday Adventure Days.

The places you've been meaning to visit for years.

The roads you've always wanted to drive.

The conversations along the way.

The laughter that sneaks up on you.

And the simple joy of spending time with someone you adore.

And yes, for those of you wondering, Persephone stayed home for this adventure.

We took Jeff's Outback.

As I told him somewhere along Skyline Drive, I was very grateful we were in his vehicle and that he was driving.

Because Persephone, hand controls, steep cliffs, and narrow mountain roads?

Nope.

Even I know where to draw the line.
